Bird & Wildlife Walk - One Truckee River & Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance
Saturday, April 11th, 10:00am-12:00pm, John Champion Memorial Park
April is the season of songbird migration. How many can you spot?
Beautiful Warblers and vibrant Tanagers fly overhead, while Flycatchers flit to and fro - snatching bugs from midair. The fish-eating Osprey, a large bird of prey, circles above the river looking for lunch. And the Belted Kingfisher perches prominently on a tree branch before diving head-first into the water for a fish. Join us at John Champion Memorial Park to observe these fantastic birds - and more!
Get to know your community while learning about the birds and wildlife that call our neighborhood parks home – and why they matter. On April 11th, One Truckee River and Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance members will lead us along the Truckee River, helping us spot and identify the birds and other animals that depend on our watershed. Jaida Marinas and Cathy Schmidt will be leading the walk.
The Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance (NNBA), formerly the Lahontan Audubon Society, is a nonprofit focused on educating the public about native Nevada birds and conserving the remaining bird habitat in northwestern Nevada. Their goal is to create a welcoming birding community where people of all backgrounds can feel a sense of belonging.
Jaida Marinas is a UNR alumnus with a degree in Biology and a minor in Analytical Chemistry. Her hobbies include baking, writing, entomology, and birding. Jaida has experience in environmental restoration, conservation, and currently works in chemistry.
Cathy Schmidt has lived in Reno for 41 years and is a retired educator with a BS in Economics from Penn State. She has three grown sons and enjoys hiking, birding, reading, and traveling. She helped found The Friends of Lake Park and volunteers regularly with many local non-profits focused on caring for our natural environment.
Spring Seed Swap
Sunday, April 12th, 10:00am-12:00pm, Lake Park
Are you getting your garden ready for spring? Have leftover or saved seeds from past years to share? Get to know your neighbors while swapping seeds – and pick up FREE native plant seeds to add to your yard!
Join One Truckee River in Lake Park to exchange seeds and gardening tips with community. Whether you’re a flower-nourisher or veggie-cultivator, you’re welcome to bring any extra seeds sitting idle around your home. Or, just bring yourself if you’re new to gardening and don’t have seeds to exchange just yet! One Truckee River will be giving away a selection of Northern Nevada native plant seeds at the swap – varieties that are well adapted to our local climate, low-maintenance to grow, and protect the Truckee River by preventing runoff.
We look forward to meeting you at the Spring Seed Swap in Lake Park. Find us on Sunday, April 12th at the River-Friendly Living Demonstration Garden.

We’ll share an update on One Truckee River's riverbank repair projects along key stretches of the waterway flowing through the heart of our community. As we explore, we’ll discover more about local efforts to improve the Truckee River Corridor.
Gardening Workshop: Making the Most of Water
Saturday, May 30th, 10am-12pm, Lake Park
How can we make the most of our high desert home’s 8 annual inches of rainfall? Join One Truckee River and landscape architect and horticulturist Tom Stille to learn about key strategies for making the most of water in our home gardens.
In this FREE workshop, we’ll talk about mini meadows, buffer strips, and drought-tolerant native plants. By using water efficiently and preventing water from flowing off our properties and down the storm drains, we can improve our river’s water quality – while growing beautiful, low-maintenance gardens!
Making the Most of Water will be held in the River-Friendly Living Demonstration Garden in Lake Park, which Tom Stille led the foundational buildout for in 2024. The Demonstration Garden showcases landscaping features, native plants, and eco-techniques to improve home-gardens – while saving time and money.
Bring your favorite camping chair, a notepad, and your landscaping questions – and get ready to improve your yard with the Truckee River in mind.
We appreciate the Truckee river every day. you’re invited to join us.
In addition to our community events, One Truckee River hosts tree planting days, community cleanups, and more. For corporate groups, we offer fully-customizable offsite events and team building opportunities.
