One Truckee River Month: A Breakdown

They say good things come in small packages, but the Truckee River deserves a big celebration. So we’re bringing you 31 days of good things all neatly packaged into the month of May. That’s right, the second annual One Truckee River Month is finally here, and it is bursting at the seams with events and activities.

From Lake Tahoe all the way to Pyramid Lake, our river celebration stretches throughout the entire Truckee River watershed this May and we promise there is something for everyone.

The Calendar

Here it is, in all its glory, the One Truckee River Month calendar. We've worked tirelessly the last few months to coordinate all of these events and cannot wait for the community to learn more about them. Of course, you’ll need to head over to our website to see the full scope, but here’s just a taste of what you can expect.

Highlighted events are Truckee River VIP events.

The Events

A main tenant of OTR Month is education, be it about the Truckee itself or how we can better care for it. Whether you want to learn how to compost, get some background on the Truckee River’s rich history, master river-friendly landscaping, pick up fly fishing, or maybe you’re looking to hone your angling skills, follow the links and look no further.

Looking to learn about and experience arts and culture along the river? Artspot’s Art Walk Reno on May 2nd is the event for you. The Art Walk starts at the BELIEVE sign and includes a docent led tour of Reno’s public art and galleries, culminating in an after-party at Pignic Pub and Patio. The tour itself is $10 and the after-party is free entry, however a portion of Pignic’s profits from the evening will be benefiting One Truckee River.

Since Renown is One Truckee River Month’s title sponsor, it is incredibly important to us to promote healthy lifestyles through outdoor activity along the river. And, lucky for us, May is also bike month! So dust off your bike and participate in the Cookie Ride from Reno to Crystal Peak Park in Verdi, the Cyclofemme Ride and Social, or just break it out on Bike to Work Day so you can pick up some free breakfast at the Reno Bike Project’s Pancake Feed. If events geared towards families are more your speed, Kiwanis will be hosting the Riding On the River Family Festival at Cottonwood Park on May 18th.

Biking not your thing? Then bring your loved ones along to Walk with Washoe, a guided walk with Washoe County staff, or to Discover Your Parks, a guided walk with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation staff.

And don't forget the events at the beginning and terminus of our watershed! The Tahoe Institute of Natural Sciences will be hosting a wildflower sketching hike at Paige Meadows and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe will be welcoming the public to their home for Pyramid Lake Day.

Be a VIP of a VIR (Very Important River)

As you know, the Truckee River is essential to the well being of our region, and so is the enthusiastic and caring community inhabiting it. That’s why we’re giving you the opportunity to become a Truckee River VIP by attending a minimum of 5 out of 10 select river month events.

The One Truckee River VIP passport. Pick up one of our fold out flyers at one of the events or at select locations around town to get started. Tear off the last page and voila! You can fold it and put it in your wallet.

To show our appreciation to our Truckee River VIPs, anyone who turns in their completed punch card to us by June 3rd will be entered to win some phenomenal prizes from local businesses and organizations. You could be the lucky winner of two Mt. Rose 19/20 lift tickets, two one-week climb/yoga memberships to Mesa Rim Climbing Centers, tickets to the Reno Aces or the Reno 1868 FC, a gift certificate to the Grand Sierra Resort Buffet, tickets to a Wolf Pack football game, a tent from REI, or some gear from Patagonia.

Now you know what this month is all about, it's time to start planning. We can't wait to celebrate our incredible river with you this May!
